Un Vacío de Sentido
2022A Void of Meaning arises from an interest in the nature of simple mechanical systems and how they represent us: they reflect the human longing to transcend time, to keep going, to advance and move forward, to reach—at an accelerated pace—the utopian ideal of progress.
It consists of an installation of precarious systems made up of basic, primary mechanisms. These small, solitary worlds (systems), each distant and independent from the others, are suspended from the ceiling, orbiting over concrete platforms of varying dimensions—a material that serves as both a symbol and a trace of human construction. This perpetual movement transports us to dystopian landscapes that repeat over and over, simulating isolated systems that initially appear stable and controlled but are now subjected to randomness, chaos, and uncertainty through human intervention. Each system is composed of a motor and a basic mechanism that makes a sphere rotate endlessly over the concrete platform, evoking a sense of imminent collapse.
Through a cyclical, purposeless motion—without beginning or end—this system metaphorizes life, equating it to the uninterrupted processes of machines. The repetition suggests the possibility of an existence already lived, making us feel as if no movement could truly alter the existing order. And yet, it still leaves a trace, hinting that life is more than mere vegetation, more than simply being awake.
